The build and playing technique of the Dilrupa is similar to the Esraj (see there), but has in comparison a larger, square resonance box. The Dilrupa is altogether a little bigger than the Esraj. The Dilrupa has 20 strings instead of 15, which produces a richer sound.

Just like the Sitar, the basic note Sa is tuned between C and D. See the following example for tuning and stringing a Dilrupa, as it is supplied by us:

PLAYING STRINGS
1st playing string: low ma - f - steel 0,40
2nd & 3rd playing strings: low Sa - c - bronze 0,40
4th playing string: very low Pa - G - bronze 0,55
5th playing string: low Pa - g - steel 0,30
6th playing string: Sa - c' - steel 0,27

SIDE RESONANCE STRINGS (all steel 0,22)
1st resonance string: low ma - f
2nd resonance string: low Pa - g
3rd resonance string: low Dha - a
4th resonance string: low Ni - h / b
5th resonance string: Sa - c'
6th resonance string: Re - d'
7th resonance string: Ga - e'
8th resonance string: ma - f'
9th& 10th resonance strings: Pa - g'

12th resonance string: Ni - h' / b'
13th resonance string: high Sa - c''
14th resonance string: high Re - d''
15th resonance string: high Ga - e''

The double tuning of the 9th & 10th string can also be tuned to a different note which is particularly important in the respective raga or for higher or lower variations of the same note.

1st low ma - f
2nd low Pa - g
3rd low Dha - a
