ELECTRONIC TABLA TAAL TARANG -
IMPROVED FOLLOW-UP MODEL OF THE RIYAZ MASTER PROFESSIONAL

The digital rhythm device Taal Tarang is a great pratice tool for anybody studying Indian melody instruments or vocal. Its great realistic sound quality, rich programming and large choice of variations make it suitable for concerts and recordings as well. Taal Tarang has hit the market in early 2005 and is a greatly improved successor of the old tabla machine Riyaz Master. It is certainly the best electronical substitute for Indian rhythm accompaniment, which is currently available.

Rhythms - Talas
Taal Tarang has 31 stored Indian rhythm cycles (talas), that differ in length, structure and accents. Mots talas have several basic rhythms (theka) available. The basic rhythm variations are grouped according to their relative speed level (laya) in these four categories: fast (drut), medium (madhya), slow (vilambit), very slow (ati vilambit). The following rhythms are available - in brackets is the number of counts, followed by the number of variations in each speed level:

- dadra (6) 4
- garba (6) 4
- rupak (7) 3-1-2-1
- teora (7) 1

- tintal (16) 3-1-2-2
- addha (= sitarkhani)(16) 3
- tilwada (16) 1-1-3-1
- duff (16) 4

This adds up to a total of 99 stored rhythms (thekas). Furthermore you can compose rhythms according to your own ideas in the programming mode.

Basic functions
Volume, speed and pitch are adjusted continuously with turning knobs. The relative speed level (laya, see above) can be selected with the increase / decrease keys. The bass / treble balance is selected from seven settings with a switch. The chosen rhythm or its variation is activated with a touch pad. A display shows the currently playing count. All settings can be changed freely while a rhythm is playing.

Special functions
The Taal Tarang, being first of its kind, offers not only tabla samples, but samples of pakhawaj (dhrupad barrel drum), dholak (folk barrel drum) and duff (frame drum) as well.
The pakhawaj samples are used for the drupad rhythms (chautal, dhamar, teora). Dholak and duff have four specific rhythms stored each. The range of available tonal colours is thus greatly expanded! The new programming mode opens the possibility of composing and storing two rhythms with a maximum of 50 counts according to your own ideas, using 12 different tabla samples (bols). Another feature is getting the speed of the currently running rhythm shown in the display in beats per minute.
