BASIC INFORMATION ON THAVIL
The
Thavil is a large (47 cm long and 30 cm in diameter),
heavy and very powerful double drum from southern India.
It is traditionally used for accompanying the piercing
Nageshwaram at open-air temple festivals. The modern Thavil
has a body that is surrounded by a steel ring. The two
skins are separately fixed to this ring with leather or
plastic straps. The bass skin is struck by a short wooden
stick, the high skin with thimbles that are put on the
fingertips.
