In former times the Bayan was made from clay and sometimes also from wood. But the clay version turned out to be too fragile for transport, so the old masters started making the Bayan from copper or brass. But these metal versions had a considerably lower weight than the clay ones. In order to make the Bayan heavier again, the insides of the metal walls were clad with molten lead. This enabled a better foothold while playing on the one hand but on the other hand, and this was even more important, also a better resonance. TARANG now offers this unique heavy Bayan quality.
The making of this Bayan was monitored by the Tabla maestro Sajal Karmakar and accepted according to his rigid standards. The special attention that is paid to this Five Star Bayan during manufacturing is in keeping with the description on the page offering the Five Star Tabla quality. Please see Five Star Tabla »
