The standard model Calcutta is manufactured by a small, unknown workshop and is a good starter model at a very reasonable price. Material and craftsmanship of the instruments do not reach by far the high quality of the branded models but they deliver the rounded, soft, sustained overtone sound typical for female Tanpuras. The keynote can be tuned to C – D.
The male Tanpuras are the longest Tanpuras with a length of 140 - 150 cm. Their construction in general is significantly more voluminous and the diapason is longer. This allows a lower tuning around C (C to D). The characteristic sonorous strong sound is a special kind of experience. Male Tanpuras are especially suited for accompanying male singers.
The richness in overtones is closely related to the position of the threads which are squeezed in between bridge and strings. The position of the threads changes the bearing angle between strings and bridge and so influences a strong or less strong vibrating/twanging which is responsible for the richness in overtones. If you would like to maintain or change the richness in overtones, you should newly adjust these threads every once in a while in order to keep your favourite sound pattern. This may be necessary with every new tuning of the instrument.
