Very recommendable! You learn systematically with a fixed course routine, at home alone! Over the course of 26 weeks you will receive a new lesson per week and a new practice plan.
For every beginner we urgently recommend this systematic course. The DVDs on offer below can be recommended as an additional complement but they can by no means replace the Tabla course for those who want to take up Tabla playing. Only Teach Yourself Tabla Vol. 2 and 3 could be an enrichment after this 6 months’ course.
DVD part 1 (49 minutes): History of the Tabla; description of the different parts of the instrument; Tabla alphabet and basic principles; partial exercises to familiarise yourself with the Tabla syllables.
DVD part 2 (86 minutes): Different compositions (Kaidas, Tukras and Chakradar Tukra); every new lesson and the individual compositions of the practice plan can be directly selected on the menu.
1 textbook (90 pages): contains detailed instructions; all compositions of the course; a 6 months' course routine (the weekly changing practice plan) and there is a part "frequently asked questions". The textbook is in English.

A very detailed discussion of the kaida, it contains over 75 examples from numerous sources, with an extensive discussion.
The DVD series "Teach Yourself...." , produced in India, offers the chance to get an insight into the Indian way of teaching. All DVDs with the labelling "Teach Yourself...." are in English and have a duration of 90 - 120 minutes. Since the DVDs were produced for the Indian market, Indian terms are occasionally required. Also, the typical Indian style of teaching sometimes does not really seem plausible and is in parts inconsistent. Also faults in the synchronous progression of image and sound occur. Due to the good price, the abundance of material and the fact that there are sometimes no alternatives on the market we offer this DVD anyway.
PLEASE NOTE: For everybody who wants to learn how to play the Tabla we recommend the course by Sajal Karmakar mentioned above. The well structured 6 months’ course gives a systematic and practical insight. The first part of the series "Teach Yourself Tabla" is of use as an additional DVD, for example because of the section about the tuning of the Tabla

TuningEN
